  • Airport Wayfinding Principles-PART 1 Strategy is key!

Airports are one of the most stress inducing places one can be in! One has to go through a series of processing points in a limited amount of time, often with no idea how much time each of those steps will take. In addition, the process complexities have become multi-fold with the introduction of online processes and prerequisites which vary from one airport operator, country to another. Why do airports need to rethink their strategy for passenger wayfinding? The navigational complexity has increased over the years with airports becoming larger. More people than before, are flying, leading to many first-time flyers (FTF). For many of these FTF, traditional wayfinding/navigation systems, such as signs and maps are not always be very easy to understand and can lead to confusion especially when they are rushing to catch their flight. Increased visual stimulus from a plethora of advertising mediums add to the sense of being lost while navigating through the airport. The world has changed post 9/11 and security measures and processes have increased/tightened leading to longer processing times which creates a sense of uncertainty in one estimation of time left to be able to catch one’s flight. Confusing or sometime non-existent information on the city side creates a sense of panic even before one reaches the airport. People’s expectations from an airport has changed from merely being a transportation space to also being a shopping & F&B space. Airports are fast becoming a brand extension of the city/operator. What would be some possible strategies one can explore to alleviate the situation? Create a strategy to segregate primary secondary and tertiary information. Use of high contrast color scheme, not in isolation, but in the current airport environment. Re-look at the scale for some of the signs. Increasing size of some information can help reduce the need for multiple support signs. Remove/reduce/selectively use information on signs. Remove redundancies and obvious information. Less is More! As far as possible, de-clutter the existing environment so that one doesn’t have to search for the required information. Extension of the existing primary addressing system that of entrance gates, check in counters and boarding gates into supporting processes and activities. Addition of dynamic information systems to existing signs to display time & other related contextual dynamic information. Process maps at strategic locations such as beginning and end of every process, for first-time flyers. Process map for AAI for their Chennai International Airport Passenger Terminal Building, For us, wayfinding design strategy is based on a holistic and systematic approach that considers the information content, the graphic system, and importantly the cultural context and milieu within which the solution resides. Our wayfinding planning process involves coordinating sign locations and messages to make navigation easy and comprehensible. A well formed wayfinding and sign design strategy helps people determine their location, destination, route, arrival, and return, and it often uses navigational clues and cues from the environment to guide the variety of users within that space. • Where There’s a Way There’s Wood: Use of wood in wayfinding

Though the ages, people have carved messages on tree trunks, leaving notes about their whereabouts to or confessing their love for their fellow being. This was our first attempt at leaving messages for posterity, our attempt at creating permanence as undying as our love! You know that feeling when you're wandering around a new city or neighborhood and get totally turned around? As much as digital maps on our phones have revolutionized navigation, there's still something comforting about spotting a wooden signpost pointing you in the right direction. We at VersionAbsolute Design Studio understands this, and we are bringing the warmth and craft of wood to the modern world of wayfinding. Based in New Delhi & Bangalore, India, we are creating signage, installations, and environmental graphics out of locally sourced timber. Our innovative use of wood is transforming spaces and giving people an authentic sense of place. Whether rustic or refined, timber signage brings warmth, texture, and character to spaces in a way that other materials simply can’t match. Natural, bespoke, and sustainably minded, wood is a material that continues to stand the test of time. Why Timber Works Wonderfully for Wayfinding Timber is the perfect material for wayfinding signage. Here are a few reasons why: Wood has a warm, natural aesthetic that creates an inviting impression. Compared to harsh metal or plastic, timber feels organic and complements most architectural styles. The texture and grain give each sign a custom, handcrafted look. Wood is highly durable and weather resistant. When properly treated, timber can last for decades outdoors. The natural oils and resins protect the wood from damage while still allowing it to breathe. With minimal maintenance, timber signs retain their appearance for a long time. Timber is versatile and customizable. It can be cut, carved, etched, or engraved to create any shape or design. Wood also takes stains, paints, and other finishes well for a variety of looks. Signs can be tailored to match a brand or location's unique style. Wood is sustainable and eco-friendly. Timber is a renewable resource and biodegradable. At the end of their lifespan, wooden signs can be recycled or disposed of without harming the environment. Using local wood also supports sustainable forestry practices. Wood conveys a sense of permanence and stability. Timber signs communicate that a place or organization has history and longevity. The solid, timeless material gives people confidence in the directions. For all these reasons, timber is an ideal material for wayfinding and signage. When you want to make a great first impression and guide people with style, wood is the way to go. Using natural, sustainable materials connects us to our environment and creates spaces where people want to be. Use of wood in wayfinding is definitely the way to go!

  • The tale of three IT Parks

Over the past year, we have worked with 3 prominent IT park & SEZ developers in the country namely Brookfield India, Blackstone and more recently Bagmane Developers in Bangalore, working on standardizing the wayfinding experience within their individual many properties. Whilst the user profile was similar, how the brand agreed to address their navigational issues, was unique in each of these branded campuses. Oxygen Business Park (OBP) This was a single campus development though it had an old part (few towers) & when we were hired, they were in a new phase of development and both these phases were a substantial years apart. Here the challenge was in integrating the product design scheme with the brand expectations & positioning of the new identity/development with the older phase. Our design response took into cognizance, this duality and we tried to express this in the simplicity of form in the informational area contrasting it with the dynamism of form in the base which reflected the aspirations of the new brand/development. Candor Tech Space (Brookfeild Asset Management) Our work with Candor was to standardize their wayfinding experience and more importantly, their brand experience as Candor had acquired 5 existing Unitech IT parks. In addition to establishing this new brand, the wayfinding program also had to accommodate future buildings which were yet to be planned but at the time of our appointment, were told will most certainly be. In this project, it was hence paramount to look at a modular sign system that could respond and evolve with the changing needs of the development. Bagmane Bangalore We started working on standardising the wayfinding experience across 2 such large campuses for Bagmane in 2020. This has now been extended to cover 5 large & sometimes, interconnected campuses. Our focus here has been to create a visually bold sign system that is the common identity/experience that binds all the sites together. More to come. Subscribe and stay connected.
