Godrej Summit is a 22 acre multi-storied residential development with 1154 apartments spread over 3 land parcels. Our scope was to design a wayfinding and a supporting sign design scheme for the development. Our approach towards establishing an identity system was to color code the three sites borrowing colors from the brand identity whilst keeping the overall graphic vocabulary monochromatic. Site direction signs for the 3 sites and their color coding, magenta, blue and green. These three colors are a part of the Godrej brand identity and here they have been extended into our sign system, for site identification as a part of the site addressing strategy These direction signs coupled with bold building identification signs make navigating withing the site, a breeze. These large building addresses are powder-coated aluminium channel wall mounted letters. Site vehicular directions signs were designed with the information in retro-reflective vinyl base with opaque base grey vinyl overlay. This ensured that only the information was highlighted when lights from an external source hit the surface of the sign. Interior direction signs follow the asset color coding scheme. Club direction signs in Aluminium and Vinyl with laser cut floor indicator. All metal surfaces powder-coated. In addition to a well planned wayfinding programs, it is important to carefully select the material and the design language of the signs needed for wayfinding. One may argue that the choice of materials and the extent of design expression is governed by the budgets.In our experience, it is extremely important as a design consultant, for us to get the client ''on-board'' with what is the most appropriate choice of materials keeping performance aspects in consideration. The above samples were made in mild steel, despite the client's initial reservations on the materials weathering performance. Such fears were easily allayed by educating the client on the performance merits of powder-coating all surfaces of the metal. This was not the only strategy used here, we also ensured that in the production of the signs, no tubular sections were used but MS sheets folded into 'C' & 'L' sections were used so that it could be powder-coated on all surfaces. Once the metal was finished, all remaining assembly was bolted with stainless steel hardware used with proper inert separators, thus further preventing any chances of corrosion. All of this can only happen if the manufacturer's facilities are equipped with CnC 3 Axis metal manufacturing machinery and they have an engineering team that can detail and discuss possibilities thoroughly on software before going into production. Simple gestures in design can create dynamism in the signs without complicating manufacturing processes. Here with a simple change in the vertices of a cuboid, we created a more sculpted base for the signs. 2017 was truly an interesting year for us, a year of many firsts. It was a year where we explored working with experiential wayfinding concepts and products, many of which we developed in our studio. It was the year of experimenting with technology to encourage user participation while helping businesses achieve their communication goals. It was a year of SEZ's with some interesting projects with Brookfield India and Oxygen Business Parks. It has been immensely interesting developing placemaking and wayfinding solutions for such environments. This has been also the year where we have developed our own static digital directory based on creating a light and efficient content management system on the Raspberry Pi platform. Our first such, of what we hope, many installations will go live in the first quarter of 2018. Exciting times! It has been a year of hard work and some epic partying! This year has been all about laying the foundations for a hopefully exciting 2018. We hope that we will have your support and encouragement as we have had these past years. Work begins on our Godrej Summit project with the first batch of prototypes being manufactured. Aluminium, acrylic & Vinyl residential interior signs. Antara Senior Living signs being installed at site. Mighty excited to see these sign programme being executed at site. Still some issues to be fixed though. Wayfinding & Placemaking for a series of Tech Parkand SEZs in India. We are having a lot of fun working with the client's team who share our enthusiasm of all things tech! 2017 started off with some fantastic possibilities, both old and new. The projects that we have been working over the past couple of years are now finally getting implemented at site. As for the new, there are some new client's and projects that we are excited to be a part of. Without giving away much, these are large IT/ITES SEZ's for an international real estate brand. This year we also experiment with our ideas of creating interactive surfaces. With this we begin our journey into designing interactive wayfinding and installations. Will keep you guys posted! Continuing our discussions on strategy, this issue we would like to focus your attention to the use of colors...thats right, those red, blue and yellow things. Colors play an important part of our understanding of the world. Imagine if everything was devoid of color (lets say everything was black or white) what choices would we have. Colors help in creating mental associations to spaces and volumes and work as memory aids to help in your experience of the environment. Lets look at one example where color is being used as a tool to create an address. Color as wayfinding strategy. Colors to identify blocks and floors... Here we propose the use of distinct colors to identify individual addresses within a residential development. A base color has been used to contrast this block colors and to create a unifying graphic element in the sign system. This graphic system in conjunction with a form and material vocabulary. In this project we have used color to identify floors of a retail center. Wayfinding is all about strategy. It is not an exercise in graphic or product design, but it's one's ability to design an information system that aids navigation and encourages explorations. A speak and recall friendly addressing system for the users is the starting point of an efficient wayfinding system. One has to keep in mind the navigational requirements and comprehension abilities of a variety of users in every environment. Lets consider one of the more critical wayfinding problems we face today... Being on time for your date Now every developer's likes to have fancy names for their projects and destinations within. This may look good on the marketing pitch but in the real world, will only get you late for your date. Simplicity is the key to formulating a 'speak and recall friendly' addressing system. At least for the essential components of the wayfinding system should have a sequential and hence a predictive addressing strategy.
